Help give Brampton a clean sweep with park litter pick-ups for Pollution Prevention Week | INsauga

You can help clean up Brampton by picking up litter, disposing of pet waste and being aware of what you put into storm drains this week.

Pollution Prevention Week lasts until Sunday with a different theme everyday, and the city is urging residents to get involved.

From helping pick up trash to using biodegradable soap when washing your car, the city is calling on residents to "promote community-wide environmental stewardship."

Tuesday's focus is on park clean-ups, and residents can start their own self-led pick-ups by picking a park and getting to work.

"Gather your team and complete your cleanup," the city says, adding to leave collected garbage bags by a park sign or park garbage can.

You can register with the city to receive clean-up supplies, and record clean-up progress through the city's new Litter Reduction Competition: Ready, Set, Collect.

"This user-friendly platform designed to encourage individuals and communities to take action and track their litter cleanup efforts by reporting the area they have visited and the amount of litter they have collected," the city says.

Wednesday will focus on water pollution, and the city is urging residents to use a commercial car wash instead of in driveways.

Unlike household wastewater from sinks or toilets, carwash run-off from your driveway doesn't go to a treatment plant.

Instead, it flows into local stormwater ponds, rivers and creeks and ultimately to Lake Ontario - the source of drinking water for millions of people, including in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon.

"Wash at home responsibly by using biodegradable soap, wash over a lawn or gravel or direct the dirty water indoors where the water is treated," the city says.

Then on Thursday, the city will turn its attention to air pollution by encouraging drivers to opt for alternate or active transportation like Bramtpon Transit or e-scooters, while Friday puts the focus on pet owners picking up after their pets and dispose of waste in the garbage, as required by city by-laws.
