Royals duo earns shot with Winnipeg Jets at NHL prospects showcase

Reggie Newman and Seth Fryer will suit up for the Jets at the 2025 Prospects Showdown.

Reggie Newman and Seth Fryer of the Victoria Royals will take the next step in their hockey journeys when they suit up with the Winnipeg Jets at the 2025 Prospects Showdown in Montreal.

"Reggie and Seth are two of our hardest working players. They put the work in each day and it's good to see them be recognized at the next level," said Royals general manager Jake Heisinger.

The two-game showcase will open at the Bell Centre on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. when the Jets face the Montreal Canadiens. Winnipeg will return to the ice the next day at 4 p.m. to take on the Ottawa Senators.

The four-team, four-game tournament also includes the Toronto Maple Leafs, though the Jets will not meet them.

Newman, a Kamloops product, has become a cornerstone for the Royals since arriving in the 2021-22 season.

His 6'2, 207-pound frame has made him a difficult matchup across the Western Hockey League (WHL), and his 232 career games with Victoria - plus 15 in the postseason - have established him as a reliable presence.

Last season, he wore an 'A' for the club, and with former captain Justin Kipkie departing for Arizona State University, he is among the candidates to take on the 'C' this fall.

He has no shortage of NHL opportunities either, having attended prospect camps with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Arizona Coyotes and Utah Mammoth.

After scoring 20 goals and collecting 33 points in 2024-25, the right-winger is expected to play an even bigger role for the Royals this year.

Fryer, meanwhile, has carved out his spot on the blue line over the past two seasons.

The Victoria-born right-handed blueliner, who stands 6'7 and weighs in at 203 pounds, has played in 133 regular season games and 15 playoff contests for the Royals, registering two goals and 18 assists.

His size makes him the tallest and second-heaviest blueliner on the roster,.

The 19-year-old was ranked 206th by NHL Central Scouting ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft and caught the attention of the Jets soon after.

He took part in Winnipeg's development camp over the summer and earned a follow-up invite to the Montreal showcase.

Before breaking into the WHL, Fryer skated locally with the Peninsula Panthers of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and the Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey Association.

"It will be a great experience for them. Any time you can go to events like that where you're playing against top players it only helps your game in the long run," said Heisinger.

The Jets will bring a familiar look to Montreal, as seven players on their 22-man roster come from WHL teams.

Among them is Brayden Yager, selected 14th overall by Winnipeg in the 2023 NHL Draft, who captained Canada at the 2025 World Juniors and Moose Jaw Warriors.

Prospect tournaments will be scattered across North America this fall, serving as the unofficial kickoff to the NHL calendar.

For the first time in years, the Young Stars Classic in Penticton will not take place, sending the Canucks, Flames, Oilers and Jets to separate events instead.

Training camps will follow soon after, with pre-season games beginning on Sept. 20.
