Even after the 49ers' contract standoff with Jauan Jennings this offseason, Kyle Shanahan's relationship with the wideout remains the same.
When Jennings returned to practice Monday after an extended injury absence, that also coincided with his request for a new contract or to be traded, the 28-year-old was spotted hugging Shanahan and general manager John Lynch on the practice field in Santa Clara -- which was symbolic of where things stand between Jennings and the 49ers' decision makers.
"Yeah, I have no issues with Jauan and [our] relationship," Shanahan told the media before Wednesday's practice. "They didn't report on the hugs Saturday, Monday, Tuesday? [With] Jauan, it's all love. It was never personal. It's business. And that's the tough thing about this. I want every player to make as much money as possible. I want every coach, I want everybody to. It's just hard in situations to always do that. But that's something as a coach you're always pulling for.
"But also, I do understand the business, too. Sometimes it's hard when other people don't. So, you've got to communicate with people and stuff like that, so it doesn't become personal. But the relationship I've always had with Jauan, [I was] never really worried about that."
Coming off the best season of his NFL career, Jennings wanted a new contract and attempted a contract hold-in before a nagging hamstring issue kept him sidelined for practice. The 49ers said they will not trade the receiver, but if they don't reach an agreement on a new contract, Jennings will become a free agent in March.
Shanahan said he expects Jennings to play Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Lumen Field.
In 15 games (10 starts) last season, Jennings caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns.
While a contract resolution still is in the works, it appears the relationship between Jennings and the 49ers has yet to sour. Now, the focus can shift purely to football as they brace for a hostile Week 1 matchup in Seattle.
