Remember that collective gasp the tech world took a few weeks ago? Reports surfaced suggesting the latest Windows 11 update was bricking SSDs, potentially leading to data loss and drive failure. The claim was that moving 50GB of data onto a drive with over 60% capacity could render it undetectable. Panic ensued.
Microsoft, to its credit, took the reports seriously and launched an investigation. They even put out a call to users, asking anyone who had experienced the issue to come forward. While we waited for their findings, Phison, a major SSD vendor whose drives were supposedly affected, decided to run its own tests.
The results are in,and the news is good: Neither Microsoft nor phison have found any evidence linking the Windows 11 update to SSD failures.
Phison put their drives through a grueling 4,500+ hours of testing and found absolutely no faults related to the update. Microsoft's investigation yielded similar results. So,what happened? It seems the initial reports stemmed from a very rare,setup-specific issue. In fact, only one detailed claim really surfaced on social media. While that user's experience was undoubtedly frustrating, it doesn't appear to be a widespread problem caused by the Windows 11 update.Bottom line: You can breathe easy. The Windows 11 update isn't going to brick your SSD. While it's always wise to back up your data (a good practice regardless!), you don't need to worry about this particular bug.
