Just a year after the Dallas Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance, who spent the season as a one-year backup, Dallas made another quarterback move. This time, they sent a fifth-round selection to the New England Patriots in exchange for Joe Milton III and a seventh-round pick.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones is convinced they came out ahead. Jones is head over heels for the new back-up.

Before Dallas' preseason opener against the Rams, Jones spoke with Kristi Scales of 105.3 The Fan and raved about Milton's potential.

"I have to pinch myself that we got him after the last game he had in New England," Jones said. "I'm thrilled we had the chance to get him, and he hasn't let us down. Every day we're more encouraged by what we're seeing."

Reports out of New England suggest the Patriots moved on because Milton wasn't content with being the clear backup to rookie Drake Maye. The team is fully committed to Maye, and they didn't want any doubts lingering in the locker room.

Milton's Cowboys debut came in Los Angeles, where he completed 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception over nine drives. He also ran for 22 yards on five carries, finishing with a passer rating of 68.6.

He exited in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury, which the team later described as just a bruise.

For now, Milton is firmly in line as the next man up behind Dak Prescott. Given Prescott's injury history, that's a role the Cowboys may need sooner rather than later.

Dallas lost 31-21 to the Rams. The next preseason game is Saturday at home against the Ravens. They will finish on August 22nd against the Falcons. The first regular season game for the Cowboys is September 4 in Philadelphia.
