Home being renovated on Syracuse's South Side damaged in fire, firefighters say

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A fire inside a one-and-a-half-story home in Syracuse was quickly extinguished by firefighters Saturday night.

Fire and smoke were seen coming out of windows and openings of the home at 601 W. Ostrander Ave. as firefighters arrived at about 8:35 p.m., according to Capt. Phillip Vogt, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department.

Firefighters entered the wood-frame single-family house from its rear door and found the fire in the kitchen, he said.

Smoke in the home made it hard to see, requiring firefighters to cut a hole in the roof for ventilation. The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes, he said.

Firefighters found no one inside the home after searching. It was determined the house was vacant as it underwent renovations.

The home has fire, smoke, and water damage. There were no injuries reported.
