Media sources indicate that Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, Financials) struck a contract with HarperCollins, a News Corp. (NWS, Financials) affiliate, to utilize the nonfiction catalog of publisher to teach its artificial intelligence models.

The agreement is a part of Microsoft's efforts to create an artificial intelligence model that has not yet been formally revealed, Bloomberg said. As demand for high-quality data to train sophisticated language models rises, Harper Collins is one of many major publishers working with big technological businesses.

Agreements between publishers and AI-oriented enterprises define this cooperation's pattern. Microsoft-backed OpenAI signed contracts with the Financial Times, Axel Springer, Dotdash Meredith (IAC, Financials) and News Corp.'s Wall Street Journal, valued at $250 million earlier this year.

In early 2024, Google (GOOGL, Financials) signed a $60 million agreement with Reddit (RDDT, Financials), thereby giving the tech behemoth access to data from Reddit's enormous collection of subreddits for the creation of artificial intelligence models.

These setups capture a changing interaction between publishers and artificial intelligence companies.

MSFT stock is changing hands for $413.20 in Wednesday's market open, down 1.1%.
