RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - A 65-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving was hit by a pickup truck that went airborne in Raleigh on Friday night, police said.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, a man driving a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 was heading eastbound on New Bern Avenue just before 9 p.m. Friday. Meanwhile, the driver of a 2005 Acura TL was stopped at a red light on Freedom Drive near the intersection of New Bern Avenue.
Preliminary investigation indicated the driver of the Dodge Ram might have had a medical emergency, resulting in the truck steering off the roadway to the right before the intersection, police said. The truck then went up the culvert leading to Freedom Drive, causing it to go airborne before striking the driver's side of the other car.
The driver of the Acura, later identified as 65-year-old Robert Traczewski, was taken to a nearby hospital, which is where he later died as a result of his injuries, Raleigh police said. The other driver was also transported to the hospital, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
"It does not appear that impairment was a factor," according to a news release from the Raleigh Police Department.
Police said the crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
