Yellowjackets report: UWS volleyball goes 2-2 in home tourney

Sep. 9 -- Inter-state rivals St. Scholastica got the better of Wisconsin-Superior volleyball in their first meeting of the season, part of a split 2-2 weekend for the Yellowjackets at the Subway Stinger Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7.

CSS went 1-1 on both days, sweeping Marian 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-21) before losing to Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 28-26, 26-24) on Friday. On Saturday, the Yellowjackets outlasted Hamline 3-2 (25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 15-10) before the Saints topped them 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 29-27, 25-21).

Ayla Oltmanns had a double-digit kill total in all four UWS matches with a high of 17 vs. Hamline, while Jenna Anderson had at least 20 digs in each Yellowjackets match, including 30 against the Pipers on Saturday.

The next tournament for the Yellowjackets (6-2) is Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14 at Macalester.

Wisconsin-Superior men's golf put together two solid days at Nemadji Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday to win its home tournament, the Twin Ports Collegiate.

UWS finished 5-over for the tournament to win by a combined 25 strokes ahead of Wisconsin Lutheran. Six schools were represented in the men's field.

Yellowjackets teammates Andrew Rude and Conner Willard had matching rounds of 71 and 69 over the two days for a two-day total of 4-under 140. Willard birdied the first playoff hole to earn medalist honors, with Duluth Denfeld alum Nate Burke finishing the tournament in third.

Augsburg won the women's tournament, with UWS in fifth place. Olivia Weyenberg of the Yellowjackets was the third-best individual.

Though Wisconsin-Superior broke through for its first goal of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7, it concluded a weekend back-to-back with its first loss of 2024, 2-1 to Wisconsin-Platteville at Walt Hunting Stadium-Marv Heikkinen Field in Duluth.

The day before, UWS played its second consecutive 0-0 draw, this time against Carleton, also in Duluth.

The UWS goal came from the penalty spot from Josh Bellamy just after the start of the second half to make it 1-1. However, about eight minutes later, the Pioneers regained their lead and held it to the finish.

Alex Paredes made a pair of saves for UWS.

On Friday, the Yellowjackets held a Carleton squad with a national (21) ranking. Paredes made three saves as UWS had the majority of shots on target, with six.

UWS (0-1-2) will travel to St. Scholastica to face the Saints on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Niya Wilson's second goal in as many games gave the Yellowjackets a first-half lead but an unbeaten Wisconsin-Platteville squad scored twice in the second half to grab a 2-1 nonconference win on Saturday, Sept. 7 at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior.

Elysabeth Lough made five saves for UWS.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, UWS made two early goals hold up for a 2-0 nonconference win over St. Scholastica at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Kamryn Hill put the Yellowjackets ahead in the fifth minute before Wilson struck in the 27th.

UWS had the better of the play, recording 20 shot attempts to the Saints' eight and putting 10 on target to the Saints' four. Quinn Clark made four saves.

UWS (2-2) will host Gustavus Adolphus on Tuesday, Sept. 10 for a nonleague game at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
