Dozens of people -- some from Eastern Iowa -- report sighting Friday

Over 70 people reported seeing a meteor streak across the sky Friday morning in the Midwest, including several reports from Eastern Iowa, according to data recorded by the nonprofit American Meteor Society.

There have been 74 reports made of the meteor, which appeared in the sky about 6:15 a.m. Friday. Four reports were made from Cedar Rapids.

John Leeson, a coordinator for local astronomy society Cedar Amateur Astronomers, said the meteor was reported to be "exceptionally bright."

A Facebook post from NASA Meteor Watch states that although the meteor was visible from multiple states, it entered the atmosphere above Wisconsin and broke up before leaving that state's borders.

It was first spotted when it was 50 miles above Fairchild, Wis., and it moved southeast at about 36,000 mph. It traveled 39 miles through the atmosphere and flared twice before breaking up 29 miles above Shamrock, Wis.

It was produced by a small asteroid -- about 3.5 feet in diameter and weighing about 4,000 pounds -- entering the atmosphere, NASA said.
