Request to prevent parking on residential road to be investigated

A request to prevent parking on a section of a road in a Weymouth housing estate is set to be investigated.

The request, from Littlemoor resident Alex Bailey, is for the introduction of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to protect the turning circle at the end of the odd-numbered side of Primula Close.

The order would have "Turning Area Only - No Parking" signage and yellow road markings to prevent obstruction and ensure safe access for emergency, service, and residents' vehicles.

The request was made at the Weymouth Town Council Planning and Licensing Committee meeting, with councillors voting unanimously in favour of forwarding it onto the highways department at Dorset Council.

Mr Bailey said: "This is not a neighbourhood dispute or restricting residents unnecessarily, it's simply about ensuring safe, consistent access for emergency services, care providers, refuse collection and delivery vehicles.

"At present, vehicles are frequently left within the turning head and double parked on both sides of the approach. When this happens, the clear width falls to about five metres which leaves no safe places for large vehicles to turn or pass.

"Pedestrians including wheelchair users and pushchair users are often forced into the carriageway."

He added: "Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service kindly visited the close. On occasion the crew entered the pathway, reversed onto a side section, and drove out again. They did not enter the turning head itself. They actually could not enter. That's understandable but illustrates the problem."

Another resident said: "We've had this problem for a little while and we had a planning enforcement officer come out in August to investigate the problem. She said it wasn't an issue."

The resident explained that the properties have single driveways and that some households have around three cars and have to park on the road due to a lack of space.

Cllr Louie O'Leary, of the Littlemoor ward, said: "I have never said no to a TRO request from a resident because my opinion is that all of them should be referred to the committee and then referred to a highways officer, who is the expert, to review it.

"I'm fully in support of this being passed onto a highways officer, which doesn't necessarily mean I support it. In fairness I don't have a great deal of complaints for this area about missed bin collections and things like that, but there has been an issue over the years of parking in and around like there is on many residential streets."

Cllr Simon Clifford said: "Photographs show some compelling evidence and it's clearly an intermittent issue."
