Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong has further intensified over the Philippine Sea outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), state weather bureau PAGASA said Friday.
In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said Fung-wong was spotted 1,315 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum sustained winds of 100 km per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 125 kph.
The tropical cyclone, with strong to storm-force winds extending outwards up to 720 km from the center, was moving west northwestward at 20 kph.
According to PAGASA, Fung-wong is expected to enter the PAR either late Friday evening or early Saturday morning and will be named locally as "Uwan"
"FUNG-WONG is forecast to make landfall over the southern portion of Isabela or the northern portion of Aurora on Sunday (09 November) late evening or on Monday (10 November) early morning," PAGASA said.
"After landfall, this TC will traverse the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon and emerge over the West Philippine Sea on Monday morning or afternoon," it added.
Fung-wong may rapidly intensify and reach typhoon category in the next 24 hours and super typhoon category Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
The tropical cyclone may also make landfall at or near its peak lifetime intensity, according to PAGASA.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) are expected to be hoisted over parts of Southern Luzon, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga Region as early as Friday afternoon or evening.
"The highest possible Wind Signal for the current forecast scenario is Wind Signal No. 5. Deterioration of weather condition may begin on Sunday (09 November)," PAGASA said.
"Potentially life-threatening stormy conditions may occur over Northern Luzon and portions of Central Luzon on Monday (10 November) and Tuesday (11 November)," it added.
PAGASA also warned of possible high storm surge risk and related coastal flooding, especially in Northern Luzon and the east coast of Central and Southern Luzon.
"Storm surge warnings may be issued as early as tomorrow," PAGASA said.
Marine hazards
For marine hazards, meanwhile, PAGASA said moderate to rough seas may be experienced over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon as well as the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao on Friday or Saturday.
Also, western and southern seaboards of Luzon may reach moderate to rough sea conditions by Saturday or on Sunday.
Hazardous sea conditions (reaching very rough, high, very high, or phenomenal seas) may be encountered in most of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao from Sunday onwards.
"Gale Warning for very rough seas in coastal waters will likely be issued tomorrow," PAGASA said.
Due to these, PAGASA advised concerned public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to continue monitoring for updates related to this tropical cyclone.
"Unless there is an intermediate issuance, the next tropical cyclone advisory will be issued at 11:00 PM today," PAGASA said. -- RSJ, GMA Integrated News
