Marjorie Taylor Greene Slams Party Members for 'Playing Games' with Shutdown: 'Republicans Need To Learn How To Wield Power'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) accused Senate Republicans of "playing games" with the current partial government shutdown and urged them to learn how to "wield" their power better.

In posts to X on Friday, Greene pushed for Republicans to use the "nuclear option" to push a budget through. Republicans and Democrats have been unable to get to a funding compromise. Republicans have accused Democrats of fighting for healthcare for illegal immigrants. Democrats are pushing for Affordable Care Act subsidies to be extended, arguing current expirations could lead to massive premium increases for citizens.

"If Republican Senators wanted to pass the CR and reopen the government they could, by using the nuclear option to override the 60 vote rule and pass the CR with a simple majority vote. We have 53 R Senators," Greene wrote on X.

Senate Republicans recently confirmed dozens of President Donald Trump's nominees. The "nuclear option," as it is widely known, allows for a simple majority rather than a typical 60 vote majority. Republicans altered chamber rules to expedite the process of getting Trump's nominees through amid Democratic opposition.

Greene dismissed concerns about the "nuclear option" having a negative impact on relationships between the major parties.

"And as far as worrying that using the nuclear option would damage partisan relations, let's be real, that ship has sailed a long time ago. There are no partisan relations. Instead, Republicans need to learn how to [wield] power when they have it and govern," she wrote, spelling "wield" as "weld."

Greene also appeared on InfoWars where she promoted the "nuclear option." The congresswoman argued that any federal cuts and layoffs being made amid the shutdown should be happening through Congress and she warned Republicans they are "punishing" American citizens by "playing games" with Democrats.

"We will not fund healthcare for illegals, but helpless women and children on WIC shouldn't be punished for political fighting in Washington," she wrote. "The Republican-controlled Senate needs to stop playing games with America Last Democrats and use the nuclear option to pass the CR and fund the government so that innocent Americans aren't hurt."

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said on Friday that Republicans have no intention of budging on their position and declared there is "nothing to negotiate" while the government is shut down.
