Ogun State Government has warned the aged and elderly in the society to desist from engaging in self medication and the practice of poly pharmacy.
The Head of Service of Ogun State, Kehinde Onasanya, gave the warning in Abeokuta during the celebration of the 2025 World Physiotherapy Day organised by the Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation department of the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board.
Speaking on the theme: "Healthy Aging and Prevention of Falls in the Elderly", Onasanya who was represented by the host Permanent Secretary of Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Olayinka Elemide, said physiotherapy and physical activities is very crucial to the overall well-being and healthy ageing of the elderly.
The number one civil servant in the state added that the senior citizens should do all in their power to desist from things that would increase their worries or bring depression.
In his remark, the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Abdul Suraj, appreciated the organisers for bringing the elderly together to share knowledge and to identify with them disclosing that the event is very important because it would help the elderly not to live their old age in pain.
The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Prof. Saka Matemilola, who led other monarchs to grace the event commended the organisers for having the elderly in mind and for not leaving them out in their old age while he encouraged the elderly to constantly consult medical personnel for proper medical attention and avoid self medication.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director, Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation, Ogun State Hospitals Management Board, Mrs. Moji Adeogun said the event was necessary to prevent falling often experienced by the elderly, encourage healthy diet and warn against engaging in poly pharmacy for healthy aging of the elderly.
