THE Philadelphia Eagles have already cut a key player from their Super Bowl run.
Cornerback Darius Slay has been released from the Eagles' roster.
Slay is one of the most decorated defensive backs in the league right now, playing 12 years in the NFL so far.
He was drafted in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and spent the first seven years of his career there.
In 2020, the Lions traded Slay to the Eagles, where he has played for the last five years.
In his career, Slay has 28 interceptions, two forced fumbles, and has scored five defensive touchdowns.
He has 619 combined tackles in his career.
Slay has played a long and productive career, but he wants to play one more season before he retires.
He is currently 34-years old and shouldn't have any trouble finding his way to a team in need of cornerback help.
It made sense for the Eagles to release Slay, as he is leaving the prime years of his career.
Cutting him saved the team just under $5 million that they can allocate to a younger player at the position.
They also already have two young stars in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean at CB1 and CB2 on the roster.
NFL fans were quick to get on social media and predict where Slay could play next after his release.
"Steelers come get a 2nd ring in a row," one fan said.
"He would make a great addition for Lions," another fan said.
"For one more year I would have kept him," a third fan said.
"He can be a good back up," a fourth fan said.
"Sounds like a Titans signing for sure," a fifth fan said.
After releasing Slay, the Eagles now have around $17 million in cap space to use.
They are already the best team in the NFL, but they can beef up their roster with some new additions this offseason.
Philadelphia is one of the favorites to trade for Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns, and they could use their cap space to afford his salary if they trade him.
