Mardi Gras ballers looking forward to new arena replacing Civic Center

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Port City's biggest party of the year -- continues to roll on in downtown Mobile. Tuesday night was all about the ladies -- the Order of LaShe's and Order of Olympia -- taking to the streets.

"Having a great time -- I'm from Los Angeles. But I love Mardi Gras in Mobile. I love the MoonPies -- I love that we call it the Boom Boom! -- And I love being on camera on FOX 10," said one man.

Amid the thousands of revelers were also some ballers -- ready for the party to continue after the parade. The after party held this year in the Mobile Convention Center -- as everyone awaits the new 300,000 square foot arena to be built.

"I'm excited -- I think that will be great," said one woman.

As the Civic Center as we knew it is now gone. The City of Mobile gave the green light today to borrow $250-million to pay for the new arena. City officials hope construction will be finished by Mardi Gras 2027 to once again host those balls.

"We can hang on for that," said one woman.

"It will be a great return -- everyone will go back to what they know best. Lee: It was a good building -- it served us well -- but bigger and better. -- Yes, it will be nice for Mobile to get some new entertainment in a new venue," said one woman.

Venue or no venue -- as we know -- the Mardi Party -- will always find a way. After all -- it's a proud tradition -- born right here in the Port City!

"Yes -- it's the best!!! Happy Mardi Gras," said a dancer in the parade.
