A tractor-trailer rollover on the Red Hill Valley Parkway (RHVP) early Thursday caused extensive damage to the guardrail, closing northbound lanes into the evening commute.

The truck was heading north on the RHVP around 12:30 a.m. when it overturned and spilled three to four large steel coils onto the road between Greenhill Avenue and King Street East, Hamilton police said.

Shortly after, all northbound lanes were closed between Mud and King streets and remained closed until almost 6 p.m.

The collision, which did not involve any other vehicles, caused extensive damage to about 300 feet of guardrail that separates the parkway's northbound and southbound lanes.

Following the crash, debris from the transport truck and damaged guardrail was scattered throughout the northbound roadway. The coils blocked the middle lanes.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries, police said.

Hamilton paramedics transported a man in his 20s to hospital in stable condition, said David Thompson, Hamilton Paramedic Service commander.

Southbound lanes remained open as crews worked to safely remove the coils, clear debris and assess damage on the other side of the parkway.

"Extensive damage was caused to guardrails by the tractor-trailer and this important road safety infrastructure must be removed and repaired before the parkway can be reopened," the city's transportation director, Mike Field, said during the closure. Transportation staff worked "as quickly as possible."
