Here's why Giants spared Shane Bowen after Brian Daboll firing

The Giants appeased some fans last week when they fired head coach Brian Daboll, but they decided to hold onto defensive coordinator Shane Bowen despite an outcry for his dismissal.

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, one of the reasons the Giants didn't fire Bowen along with Daboll is that they wanted interim head coach Mike Kafka to make staffing decisions.

"He was the OC before," Hughes wrote. "He needed to familiarize himself with defensive staff, then decide if a change needed to be made and who would replace Bowen."

While speaking to the media on Thursday, Bowen took responsibility for the unit's poor performance.

"There's a responsibility that falls on me," Bowen said. "We haven't been good enough defensively, particularly closing out games. Evaluating everything - scheme, personnel, different situations what we can do to continue to improve. We have to find ways to win these games and not give it up in the fourth."

Bowen also commented on Daboll's firing.

"I'm very appreciative of my time with him," he said. "He's done a lot for me; I've learned a lot from him. I can't say enough about him as a leader and what he's meant to me over these last two years."

Daboll finished his tenure with the Giants with a 20-40-1 regular season record.
