Met Office forecasts snow and 'below freezing' cold snap for Scotland this week - Daily Record

Scotland is bracing itself for heavy snow this week as temperatures are set to drastically plummet across much of the country.

Multiple forecast models are predicting the white stuff for the UK this, week, with the Met Office predicting snow for Scotland as well as a cold snap. Elsewhere, WX Charts is showing flurries occurring across the country.

In addition, temperatures are set to dip into into minus territory, signalling a major seasonal shift. It comes after a rain warning was issued for the southwest that is in place today, November 11, and is expected to last until later this evening.

According to the national forecaster, Scotland can expect snow this Wednesday, November 12, along with the mercury dropping significantly.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Neil Armstrong, said: "The UK is in for an unsettled week of weather, with frequent spells of heavy rain and at times strong, gusty winds. Given recent wet weather and saturated ground in places, this could lead to some flooding.

"Difficult travelling conditions are also expected, with delays and the increased possibility of accidents.

"There will be spells of drier and brighter weather at times, and temperatures will begin to fall closer to average for the time of year from the north. We will see a return of below freezing temperatures in Scotland overnight, with even the chance of some snow over mountains on Wednesday night."

The latest WX Charts weather map, which uses MetDesk data, shows some areas in the Western Highlands will see temperatures fall to -8C over the next week with up to 13cm of snowfall (5 inches).

WX Charts show that light snowfall will begin from Thursday (November 13) in Fort William and will heavily progress through the day, reaching a max depth of 12cm (4 inches) at a rate of around 12cm per hour.

Snowfall is expected in the area for the rest of the month, with weather charts showing a heavy influx of snow on Friday (November 21) with a peak depth of 24cm (9 inches).

Inverness will also experience a lighter flurry of snow on Thursday (November 13) with around 3cm of depth which is expected to get heavier over the next week, with maps showing snowfall reaching up to 13cm by Thursday (November 20).

Meanwhile, in Portree, conditions are set to significantly change too. Starting from Monday (November 17), the cold front will spread in a north westerly direction from Fort William to Portree and the area will experience light snow with depths of up to 2cm.

However, come Friday (November 21), conditions will have drastically changed in Portree with peak depths of 27cm (10 inches) to hit the area around midday.

While the rest of the country appears to have dodged the snow for now, temperatures are set to significantly drop across Scotland in the coming days.

Starting from Sunday (November 16), temperatures across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire and Dundee are set to hit freezing and will hit the early minuses later in the week.

Meanwhile, in the areas where heavy snowfall is expected, temperatures will reach lows of -8C by Tuesday (November 18).

Looking to the weekend, the Met Office does anticipate clearer conditions for much of Britain.

A statement from the organisation reads: "By the weekend much of the UK will be under the cooler airmass with overnight frosts in places, and while there will still be some showers around it'll be a much drier and brighter spell of weather.

"The main exception is in the south and southwest, where it may still be somewhat cloudier and milder with some patchy rain for a time, before this eventually clears."
