A WOMAN from Yeovil died at home from a blood clot following surgery to fix a hip socket fracture, an inquest heard.

Dawn Fry was hit by a car while riding on a motorbike in August 2023. She sustained a hip socket fracture and was treated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

The inquest heard Mrs Fry received anticoagulation medication while she was in hospital, but was not provided with this once she was discharged, despite the fact it should continue to be administered daily for four weeks.

Mrs Fry's cause of death was 'a post-operative thromboembolism' from deep vein thrombosis in her right leg, the coroner concluded.

The inquest heard that the lack of anti-coagulation medication post-discharge 'made a likely contribution' to her death.

A spokesperson for North Bristol NHS Trust said they have now introduced a new prescribing system to help 'improve clarity'.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of Mrs Fry at this time," the spokesperson said.

"At North Bristol NHS Trust, patient safety remains our absolute priority, and we are committed to learning and improving wherever necessary.

"Since Mrs Fry's death, we have introduced a new electronic prescribing system to improve clarity and auditability, as well as improved guidance for our staff on venous thromboembolism (VTE)."

The man who knocked Mrs Fry off her motorbike was fined £1,150 and banned from driving for 12 months.

Charles Hudson, pulled across some chevrons as he exited the Horsey Lane roundabout in Yeovil and collided with a motorbike being driven by Mrs Fry's husband.

Hudson, 58, now lives in New South Wales, Australia, was sentenced at Yeovil Magistrates Court earlier this year.

He was also ordered to pay a £460 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
