On Saturday afternoon, Trump joined Vice President-elect JD Vance, embattled Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth, potential backup defense option Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and others for the game outside Washington. Daniel Penny, who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide this week in the chokehold death of an agitated subway rider in New York, was also a guest of Trump and Vance. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea's parliament has impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his martial law decree, a move that ended days of political paralysis but set up an intense debate over Yoon's fate. US officials have been in direct contact with the Syrian rebel group that ousted Assad, Blinken says

AQABA, Jordan (AP) -- Secretary of State Antony Blinken says American officials have been in direct contact with the Syrian rebel group that led the overthrow of Bashar Assad's government but is designated a foreign terrorist organization by the United States and others. Blinken is the first U.S. official to publicly confirm contacts between the Biden administration and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS. The group ousted Assad from power last weekend. Blinken was in Jordan for meetings on Saturday. He wouldn't discuss details of the contacts but said it was important for the U.S. to convey messages to the group about its conduct and how it intends to govern in a transition period.

Mystery drone sightings keep happening in New Jersey. Here's what we know (and don't know)

A large number of mysterious drones been reported flying over parts of New Jersey in recent weeks and have more recently been spotted over New York City, sparking speculation and concern over who sent them and why. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials say the drones don't appear to be a threat to public safety, but some state and municipal lawmakers have nonetheless called for stricter rules about who can fly the unmanned aircraft. The FBI is among several agencies investigating, and it has asked residents to share videos, photos and other information they may have about the drones.

Ukrainian drones strike Russia as Kyiv reels from consecutive massive air attacks

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukrainian drone strikes on southern Russia have killed a 9-year-old boy and set fire to a major oil terminal. Russian officials say attacks outside Belgorod near Ukraine on Saturday wounded the boy's mother and 7-month-old sister. A day earlier, Moscow launched a massive aerial attack on its neighbor that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said was one of the heaviest bombardments of the country's energy sector during the nearly 3-year-old war. Zelenskyy also said that a "significant number" of North Korean troops were being deployed by Moscow in assaults in Russia's southern Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have held on following a stunning cross-border incursion this summer.

Ex-soccer player Kavelashvili becomes Georgia's president in a blow to country's EU aspirations

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) -- Former soccer player Mikheil Kavelashvili has become president of Georgia as the ruling party tightens its grip in what the opposition calls a blow to the country's EU aspirations and a victory for Russia. Kavelashvili easily won Saturday's vote given the Georgian Dream party's control of a 300-seat electoral college that replaced direct presidential elections in 2017. Georgian Dream retained control of Parliament in an Oct. 26 election that the opposition alleges was rigged with Moscow's help. Georgia's outgoing president and main pro-Western parties have since boycotted Parliament and demanded a rerun of the ballot.
