FAYETTE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) -- Coroners in eastern Indiana are touting a "profound" and "historical" finding after a 4,200-year-old skull was found in the Whitewater River.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office announced the significant discovery on Monday.
The remains were found on the banks of the Whitewater River on June 2, and promptly reported to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.
Coroners say the skull's age was confirmed through radiocarbon dating performed at the University of Indianapolis Human Identification Center and the University of Georgia, dating it back to 2300 B.C.
Fayette County Coroner Eddie Richardson says the discovery serves as a "powerful and humbling" reminder of the millennia-long presence of people in Fayette County.
Due to the antiquity of the remains, the coroner's office says it is is collaborating with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to determine the next steps for repatriation and site management.
