Cork Opera House is celebrating the big 1-7-0 this year - and RTÉ is joining in with a Nationwide special this evening.
You've possibly been to the Opera House a few times, but tonight at 7pm on RTÉ One host Anne Casin will get a behind-the-scenes look at the venue and its long history, as well as hearing from locals about their connection to the iconic theatre.
The Opera House has been through several shapes and sizes in its lengthy life. The first building was opened in 1855 - and three years later Charles Dickens came to town to perform readings of his stories. The original Opera House burned down in 1955, and a new version opened on the same site 10 years later.
These days more than 100 productions pass through the 1,000-seat venue every year - and the Opera House has been celebrating its 170th anniversary with some special shows and exhibitions.
On September 10, there will be an Irish trad show with music by the Bantry festival group, Masters of Tradition. The evening will be curated by the group's artistic director, Martin Hayes, and they promise to have a lot of special guests on the night, such as piano player Cormac McCarthy.
Cork Opera House CEO Eibhlín Gleeson said: "170 years is an incredible achievement and tis would not be possible without the community around us - we know from talking to the community that there is a considerable amount of memorabilia and historical artefacts out in the community and peoples stories, special memories and anecdotes."
In March a black-tie gala was held to celebrate the anniversary - you can check out a gallery of all the glitz and glam here.
Among those present were Killian Donnelly and Claire O'Leary of West End fame, beloved Cork Soprano Majella Cullagh, singers Rachel Croash, Emma Nash, Laoise Leahy, Rory Dunne and Precious Abimbola, alongside a host of well-known actors and performers including Michael Grennell and Dylan Howe.
