Christmas fayre raises hundreds for breast cancer charity

A retirement community's Christmas fayre raised hundreds of pounds for a breast cancer charity.

Mount Battenhall Retirement Village in Worcester held its annual Christmas fayre on Monday, November 11, raising £386.73 for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.

The charity supports breast cancer patients across the county.

Sprigg's Restaurant at the retirement village was transformed into a winter marketplace, with stallholders from across the county donating to the charity in return for their pitch.

Visitors enjoyed mince pies and Baileys hot chocolate while browsing stalls selling scented candles, board games, sweets, jewellery, and gifts for dogs.

The village's resident artist Jill Lloyd also had a stall featuring her artwork.

At lunchtime, hot turkey rolls were served with prosecco, followed by a performance from Andy Bayley, 'the King of Swing', in the village's lounge.

Sally Young, a resident at the village, said: "It was wonderful to have such a lovely shopping experience on your doorstep so close to Christmas.

"I did quite a bit of Christmas shopping.

"The turkey rolls were delicious, and the music was super in the afternoon, I thoroughly enjoyed it."

Visitors also had the chance to win Sunday lunch for four and afternoon tea at Mount Battenhall in a raffle, with all proceeds going to Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.

Alexandra Craigie, the charity's director, said: "Breast cancer is the largest cancer affecting women, and as the only breast cancer charity in Worcestershire, we need to raise £250,000 a year to support patients in our county.

"Everything we raise is done so here in the community, so the support of Mount Battenhall Village and its residents is so important to us.

"Thank you so much for your support and Happy Christmas from everybody at Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven."

Tom Newitt, marketing manager for the village, said: "The Christmas Fayre is a fantastic opportunity for our retirement community to come together with family and friends before Christmas, but it also brings a unique selection of locally sourced gift ideas directly to our homeowners.

"The fact that we were also able to raise funds for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven thanks to the kindness of our homeowners, visitors, and stallholders was the icing on the Christmas cake."
