'Sex and the City' star Kristin Davis mourns father's death: 'An extraordinary life'

"Sex and the City" star Kristin Davis is mourning the death of her father.

Davis, 59, revealed her dad Tom Atkinson had died recently after living with Parkinson's disease for a decade, she shared in a post on Instagram Monday. The actress, most famed for her role as Charlotte in "Sex and this City", called her father's experience with the nervous system disease "a very real and difficult struggle."

"He lead (sic) an extraordinary life," Davis wrote, "He was born in a cabin on a river in North Carolina and ended up giving speeches all over the world about his research in psychology." Davis went on to call him "brilliant and bright" and highlighted the devotion of her mother and his medical team in caring for him.

"Thinking of our whole family and especially my Mom. We love you dad and we are so grateful you lit up our lives and left us with so much," she wrote.

"Sex and the City" co-star Cynthia Nixon showed support for Davis in a comment, writing, "Kristin, this is so beautiful. He would be so proud to be honored by you in this way."

Nixon also praised Davis' work ethic during the difficult time. "You were such a trooper at work both before and after he passed," she wrote, "I can imagine how very hard that much have been."

Evan Handler, who played Davis' husband Harry on "Sex and the City," also showed support, commenting, "So sorry for this huge loss. Thank you for the beautiful tribute."

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that may start with small symptoms but worsens over time, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can begin with small tremors and progress into stiffness and trouble balancing.

Many of the symptoms are caused by a loss of neurons that produce dopamine which can lead to irregular brain activity. Because the cause remains unknown there is no sure-fire way to prevent or cure it, though some symptoms can be treated.

Davis also posted a video on her Instagram story Monday of Michael J. Fox speaking about Parkinson's. Fox was diagnosed with the disease in 1991 at age 29 and has been a vocal advocate on behalf of other patients since he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000.
