Community Calendar: Brats, corn and beer in Superior; churches hold festivals, dinners

Sep. 6 -- Superior: St. Francis Xavier Church is holding a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Miscellaneous items, excluding clothing, for sale at 2316 E. Fourth St.

Superior: The Street Level House, 952 N. 16th St., is holding a rummage sale and will have free coffee and espresso for college students from 8-4 p.m.

Superior: Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery program, is meeting at a new location, Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, 4020 S. Darrow Road, at 5:30 p.m.

Maple: The Lake Superior Steelhead Association is hosting a program on how to use a spey fly-fishing rod from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at McNeil's on the Brule, 13748 McNeils Landing Road. Lunch provided. Bring a drink and a chair.

Superior: The second annual Brat, Corn and Beer Bash is 12-8 p.m. at Moose Lodge 606 at 56 E. Fifth St. $5 meal, music from Cowboy Angel Blue from 4-7 p.m., cornhole and ladder golf games and hourly 50/50 drawings.

Gordon: Take a historical walking tour of downtown Gordon with Brian Finstad, Gordon-Wascott Historical Society's historian, at 2 p.m. Meet at the Gordon Depot.

Gordon: The Gordon-Wascott Historical Society will host an appreciation reception from 4-7 p.m. at the 1911 Soo Line Railroad Depot and 1907 Whalen House. It will include live music by The Letter M, wine, food and door prizes. A 5 p.m. presentation will recognize donors and volunteers. Donations accepted.

Superior: Faith United Methodist Church, 1531 Hughitt Ave., is holding a fall festival and open house at 11:30 a.m. with bounce houses, games, music, prizes and burgers and brats.

Solon Springs: Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 11405 S. First St. W., is hosting a free community campfire from 4:30-6 p.m. with hot dogs, brats and s'mores.

Town of Superior: A ham and meatloaf dinner will be served 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. William Catholic Church, 3095 E. County Road B. Dine in or take-out. Cost is $15 for most, $5 for elementary-age children and free for younger children. There also will be a bake sale, country garden and silent auction.

Superior: Dennis White kicks off the UW-Superior Indigenous Alumni Speakers Series at 3 p.m. in the William "Pope" Wright Student Center in Old Main. White will speak about his work as an educator and artist. Free and open to the public.

Superior: The Twin Ports Chess Club invites beginners to learn how to play chess from 5-7 p.m. at the Superior Library.

Superior: The Superior Downtown Farmers' Market runs from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1215 Banks Ave., east of the World of Wheels Skate Center.

Superior: University of Wisconsin-Superior's Superior Adventures offers a guided paddle of the waters around Superior from 6-8 p.m. at Wisconsin Point. Cost is $10 and includes canoe or kayak, paddle and personal flotation device rental. Transportation to and from the landings can also be provided. Register at

Superior: Carl Wahl, a former U.S. Secret Service agent, will speak 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. Wahl will talk about the history of the Secret Service, presidential assassinations and attempts and measures to prevent currency counterfeiting.

Superior: The Friends of Superior Public Library hold their annual book sale fundraiser at the library on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Items in the large meeting room will be available by donation; individually priced items available in another room.

Superior: Roots in Blue, a rock band of the U.S. Air Force, will perform a free concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historic Center. The six-piece group is the newest performing group of the USAF Band of Mid-America. Seating is limited, first come, first served, with additional standing viewing from the mezzanine.

Superior: The Spartans Tackling Cancer football game at 7 p.m. will include a silent auction and other fundraising activities to support people who have cancer.

Superior: Earth Rider Fest starts at noon at the Earth Rider Brewery festival grounds and includes music, food trucks, beer, art vendors, games, inflatables, face-painting and other children's activities. $60 admission for adults, $10 for children.

Douglas County: The Town of Superior Fire Department Auxiliary is holding a poker run fundraiser. Stop at five bars to collect a card for a poker hand. Entry is $20 at any bar, including Oliver Tavern, Drifters, Amnicon Bar and Backyard Bar and Grill. Arrive at Eldorado Bar by 6 p.m. for final card and to turn them in and have food (included in the entry fee). The top three hands receive a cash prize.

Superior: The Salvation Army of Superior is holding a hymns and pie fellowship at 916 Hughitt Ave. Music from the Senn family. Bring a pie to share.

Superior: The Commemorative Air Force Lake Superior Squadron is holding a rummage sale at the Richard Bong Memorial Airport from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of items will be for sale and proceeds will help restore WWII aircraft. Shoppers can also visit the squadron's museum.

Solon Springs: The Little Gift House and Solon Springs Forward will host the 15th annual Food Shelf Benefit and Fall Equinox Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with vendors along Main Street. The event will include presentations, music, games, local authors, a silent auction and more. Prior to the benefit, the North Country Trail Association Brule-St. Croix Chapter will make a round trip through Lucius Woods County Park then to Aden Creed Campsite, then return to the event. The 5 mile walk/hike/run will meet at Lucius Woods overflow parking at the corner of E. Main Street and South Fourth Street E. at 9 a.m. Donations of non-perishable food will be accepted. Oakland: The town's fall festival is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at town hall, 6152 S. County Road K. The event includes a car show, petting zoo, games, chili cookoff, food truck and music from Andy Hauswirth.

Superior: An adults-only purse bingo fundraiser for the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse is at noon at the Belgian Club, 3931 E. Second St. Cost is $40, cash only, at the door. Participants must be 18 and older to enter. There will be a wide variety of purses and wristlets by Michael Kors, Coach and Kate Spade. A cash bar, and $5 sloppy Joes will be available.
