Jerod Mayo expects Drake Maye to get more reps in next preseason game vs. Eagles - The Boston Globe

Jerod Mayo expects Drake Maye to get more reps in next preseason game vs. Eagles - The Boston Globe

"We'll see how it looks going forward," Mayo said. "It won't always be the same, because we're still evaluating everyone on the roster, but especially the quarterbacks.

"I would also say during practice he gets a lot of reps. And then, going into the Eagles week, this, honestly, is a huge week for everyone to practice against the Eagles.

"We'll see how the reps kind of break down in the game, but I expect Drake to get more reps than he did in the first game."

Working behind the starting offensive line, Maye finished 2 for 3 for 19 yards, including a 13-yard pass to running back Antonio Gibson that went for a first down.

Maye, the third overall pick in the draft, didn't sound concerned about playing only six snaps.

"I've been getting a lot of reps in practice," he said after the game. "Practice matters, and you have to make sure that translates in the game. Trying to take all the reps I'm getting and make the most of them. I think the rest of the preseason I'll be out there more, so I'm looking forward to that."

Maye worked in relief of veteran Jacoby Brissett, who also played only a single series and finished 0 for 3. As Mayo promised earlier in the week, all four quarterbacks played against the Panthers. Bailey Zappe played the bulk of the second and third quarters, while rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton took over late in the third and finished the game.

"Each one of these quarterbacks have an individual development plan that I've gone over with [offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt] and the rest of the staff," Mayo said, "and we're sticking to that plan until it's time to change."

One thing that could spark more time for Maye is a steadier offensive line. There have been injuries there, as well as the uncertainty that comes with evaluating rookies.

Mayo noted earlier this summer that a reasonable facsimile of what will be the starting group should come into focus after the second preseason game.

In the meantime, they continue to shuffle personnel in hopes of finding the right combination.

"They're still under construction, the offensive line," Mayo said. "I've said it since Day One -- we're going to play the best five, no matter what that combination looks like. We're always trying to get better.
