Equinix Ups Earnings Forecast As AI Demand Fuels Growth

Equinix has revised its annual earnings forecast upward, driven by surging demand for data centers powered by the generative AI boom and strategic acquisitions in Southeast Asia.

What does this mean?

Equinix now expects its adjusted core earnings to hit between $4.07 billion and $4.13 billion for 2024, up from an earlier forecast of $4.04 billion to $4.12 billion. Analysts had pegged their expectations at $4.10 billion, according to LSEG data. The increased forecast is fueled by the expanding adoption of generative AI, which requires powerful servers and advanced cooling systems best suited to data centers. This shift has boosted Equinix's prospects alongside its peer Digital Realty Trust, as companies seek to incorporate AI into their products and move workloads to the cloud. The recent addition of three data centers in the Philippines further strengthens Equinix's position in the high-growth Southeast Asian market.

Generative AI's demand for high-power servers is driving robust growth for data center services. Equinix and companies like Digital Realty Trust are benefiting as businesses invest heavily in AI and cloud transitions. Equinix's second-quarter revenue aligned with estimates at $2.16 billion, while Q3 projections aim for $2.19 billion to $2.21 billion, close to analyst forecasts of $2.21 billion.

The bigger picture: Global data footprint expands.

With its acquisition of three data centers in the Philippines, Equinix is capitalizing on Southeast Asia's high growth potential. This move is part of a broader strategy to meet global demands for advanced data infrastructure, essential for supporting AI developments and cloud computing. Such expansions are crucial as more firms look to harness AI, potentially reshaping global data center dynamics.
