Brightspeed customer frustrated over outages, communication

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) -- A Brightspeed representative says more than 300 customers in Northeast Tennessee are still without voice services after Hurricane Helene caused flooding in the area.

One of those customers is 90-year-old Doris Durey of Jonesborough. While she is thankful not to have physical damage at her house, she was without power for nine days until utility poles were replaced. But now more than two months after the floods, she tells News Channel 11 she's frustrated that Brightspeed hasn't restored internet on those poles.

"You'd be surprised what the Internet is used for. My heating system uses the Internet. My security system uses the Internet," said Durey.

For now, Durey has turned off her SMART central air system and is using a wood burning stove. She drives into Jonesborough with her computer to check her email and has increased her data plan on her cell phone until Brightspeed repairs the lines to restore her cellular and Internet service.

She says it's been frustrating with the company's automated phone system.

"You know, I could never get in touch with Brightspeed when I tried." Durey recounted. "I got ahold of some that were not local. And then I finally got ahold of some that were local. And they had a script to go from also. And they, I think, did not dare deviate from the script that they had been given."

Durey says she's documented more than a dozen phone calls to the provider, which gave her at least six different repair dates, but each date has passed with no repairs to the line.

"They said they were coming and then they didn't come," Durey told News Channel 11.

Durey has paid for two months of internet she's not used.

"I did call [Monday] and asked them to credit my credit card with those payments that I have made that I should not have made." Durey said. "They said they'd get a look into it."

News Channel 11 raised Durey's concerns to Brightspeed and received a statement late Tuesday afternoon. A representative says Internet could return before the end of the week.

We are still working to restore service to more than 300 voice service customers in Northeast Tennessee who are without service as a result of Hurricane Helene. Unfortunately, Ms. Duey (sic.) is one of those customers. There are several utility poles that supported the copper network providing the Duey household with its voice service. Four of the poles were washed out by flooding as a result of Helene. We've recently learned that the utility company was able to replace the four poles. We are working to replace the lines on those poles and anticipate restoring Ms. Duey's service by the end of this week.

We are also working to provide credit for the outage the Duey household is experiencing.

When News Channel 11 told Durey about Brightspeed's statement, she said she was happy but apprehensive.

"I'll believe it when it's working," Durey said in a phone call.

News Channel 11 will continue to follow the story until Durey's service is restored.
