Man arrested after allegedly shooting at homeless encampment in downtown Atlanta, police say

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man has been arrested after allegedly firing at a homeless encampment in downtown Atlanta, according to police.

Police said according to witnesses, shots were fired from an SUV into the encampment near the intersection of Forsyth Street SW and Peachtree Street on Oct. 10.

The SUV was later found at an address on Lee Street. Police said shell casings were found inside and a gun was found in nearby woods.

Police tracked the car's registered address to a nearby apartment complex and arrested Alexander Wood in connection with the shooting.

Wood was charged with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm near a public highway, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving while license suspended, reckless driving, failure to obey traffic control device and fleeing and eluding.

According to police, Wood has been arrested 36 times.
