The Indianapolis Colts are going with experience over youth.
Daniel Jones will begin the season as the team's starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson, Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced Tuesday.
Jones was signed to a one-year, $14 million deal in the offseason, with the expectation that he would compete against the 2023 fourth overall pick Richardson for the starting job.
The 23-year-old Richardson has struggled in the NFL, both with injuries and inconsistent play. He played just four games as a rookie before a shoulder injury ended his season, then he was benched mid-season last year for Joe Flacco.
Jones, 28, now gets a second chance in the NFL after flaming out with the New York Giants last season. The former first-rounder was benched and released by New York in November, signing with the Minnesota Vikings for the rest of 2024 before joining the Colts in March.
Over six seasons with the Giants, Jones posted a 24-44-1 record in 69 starts with 70 touchdown passes, 47 interceptions and 50 fumbles. He led them to the postseason once in 2022, which earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension. Everything unraveled from there, as he's faced the same problems that Richardson has with injuries and inconsistent production.
Richardson started the opening preseason game for the Colts before injuring his finger, while Jones got the start in Week 2. Jones went 7 of 11 for 101 yards in Week 2; Richardson was 6 of 11 for 73 yards.
Jones' ascension to the starting job will make him the Colts' eighth different Week 1 starting quarterback in the last nine seasons -- with Richardson as the only repeat (2023 and 2024). For a franchise that once relied on the stability of Luck and Peyton Manning, it's been a tumultuous recent run.
