Column: We finally saw what I expected

That's what Tiger fans were sold on from people like me coming into the season, that's what we expected and knew the team was capable of.

It wasn't a 300-yard passing performance like so many games last year, though 268 on just 20 attempts from a quarterback still recovering from a throwing-wrist injury is a solid day, especially when he completed 75 percent of his throws.

The Tigers surpassed 450 total yards for the first time against a power-conference opponent and, after a couple of rough drives to open the game, never really looked like they were struggling to get going.

Missouri was 11-of-18 on third downs with most of those third downs being short-yardage situations. They were 2-of-2 on fourth downs, they scored on 4-of-5 red zone trips with the one failure being the kneel downs at the end of the game with Drinkwitz shouting expletives at the Mississippi State sideline telling them to "shut the f*** up or I'm going to score."

It was confident, it was easy. It was what I thought a lot more of this season would look like.

But it hadn't. It didn't go the way we all dreamed of for this year.

So much of this season, the offense looked like it was struggling to get in rhythm, to find that confidence, to cruise through an opposing defense the way it had for so much of last year.

I was so excited coming into the season to watch Burden run through defenses the way he did Saturday, juking defenders all the way to a conversation about the Biletnikoff Award and who would be near him as receivers going at the top of the draft.

I was excited to watch Wease take advantage of the easier matchups he would get because defense's had to focus so much energy on stopping Luther that Theo would be open every play and would make guys miss on the way to another career-best season.

Wease is still having a career-best season. For the first time, he's over 700 yards and 50 catches, both surpassing his best marks set last year of 49 catches and 682 yards. Though he wont match his six touchdowns from last year unless he scores three more.
