Judge dismisses wrongful death lawsuit that Gabby Petito's parents filed against Moab, Utah police

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah judge has dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents Gabby Petito against the city of Moab. The lawsuit alleged that police there did not do enough during a traffic stop to protect their daughter from the man who killed her weeks later. The plaintiffs' lawyer says a state law making governmental agencies immune from lawsuits is unconstitutional and an appeal is planned. Moab police encountered the couple in August 2021 and made them spend the night apart. The city says it is not liable for Petito's death because the couple continued traveling. They cited several cases where courts have not found police at fault when domestic violence turns to murder.

Comcast to spin off cable networks that were once the entertainment giant's star performers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Comcast is spinning off into a new company many of its cable television networks that were once at the heart of the entertainment giant, as consumers increasingly swap out their cable TV subscriptions for streaming platforms. Those one-time stars for Comcast's NBCUniversal cable television networks include USA, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel, as well as CNBC and MSNBC. Peacock will remain with Comcast, as will Bravo, which provides significant content for the Peacock streaming service. How exactly this split will impact customers has yet to be seen, particularly as Comcast aims to complete the transition over the next year. But some analysts speculate that the spun-off networks may have more freedom to bring their content elsewhere.

The dark energy pushing our universe apart may not be what it seems, scientists say

NEW YORK (AP) -- Distant, ancient galaxies are giving scientists more hints that a mysterious force called dark energy may not be what they thought. Astronomers know the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate and they have long thought that a constant force called dark energy is what is pushing it apart. But findings published Tuesday by an international research collaboration are bolstering the suggestion first made earlier this year by the same group that there may be something else going on. By looking at the movement of galaxies over billions of years it appears as though the energy appears is changing or weakening over time.
