MERIDIAN, Idaho -- Caldwell High School defeated Borah in a penalty kick shootout Tuesday night at Rocky Mountain High School to capture the school's first-ever 6A state soccer championship, completing a remarkable underdog season.

The Cougars won the shootout after the match remained scoreless through regulation and double overtime. The game was a continuation of a match that was suspended on Saturday due to weather conditions.

Caldwell seized early control of the shootout, blocking Borah's first attempt before scoring to take a 1-0 lead in PKs. After Caldwell blocked Borah's second penalty kick, Borah fought back to tie the shootout at 3-3, but their next attempt sailed over the net in a crushing moment for the Lions.

Octavio Sandoval then converted the decisive penalty kick for Caldwell, securing the historic state title for the Cougars.

The championship caps an improbable season for Caldwell, which moved up from 5A to 6A competition this year. The team faced significant doubts throughout the season after posting a losing record the previous year.

"This means everything to me. Because all year long we have plenty of doubters," Horacio Hernandez, Caldwell's goalkeeper, said after the match. "We had people that no one believed in us. So coming from a place like that is just, you know, we always underdogs. That's what we call this run, we call it the underdog run."

The Cougars embraced their underdog status entering the postseason with modest goals.

"I want to show them that we are worthy of respect at the highest level. And that's all we wanted. A winning record, sneak in the state," Caldwell head coach Rhys Yeakley said.

The respect they now have, from losing a season a year ago, to moving up a division and now winning a state championship in their second year.
