Storms bring heavy rain and severe weather this weekend

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The first round of scattered to numerous showers and storms arrives today, with the potential for strong to severe storms early Sunday.

TODAY'S FORECAST

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will move through by early afternoon, producing periods of heavy rain.

Rain chances decrease by late afternoon and evening, possibly allowing for a break just in time for the home football games. However, a few T-showers may linger.

FOOTBALL FORECASTS

A brief lull in rain activity is expected after the first round of storms moves east, improving the outlook for the Southern University game.

A few lingering, isolated showers are possible, but conditions will otherwise be mostly cloudy with mild temperatures in the 70s, but it's still a good idea to bring the rain gear just in case.

For the LSU game later in the evening, a few on-and-off showers or T-showers are possible, so plan for occasional rain during the game. Temperatures look to remain in the low 70s.

A few strong to severe storms are possible with the second round of scattered to numerous thunderstorms arriving late tonight into early Sunday morning. The Storm Prediction Center places much of Louisiana under a Level 2 out of 5 (Slight Risk) for severe weather.

Primary threats include damaging winds, localized flash flooding, and a few brief, embedded tornadoes.

Since this next round is expected overnight, make sure to keep emergency alerts enabled and your phone ringer on so you'll be notified if a warning is issued while you're asleep and can take shelter if necessary.

The Weather Prediction Center forecasts 2 to 3 inches of rain on average across south Louisiana through Sunday, with isolated totals above 3 inches possible. This could lead to isolated flash flooding and ponding of water in low-lying or poor-drainage areas.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK

Following the weekend storms, another cold front is expected early next week, delivering a nice fall cool down and a relatively quiet stretch of weather. By late week, morning lows dip into the upper 40s with afternoon highs in the upper 60s just in time for Halloween.
