Nigeria's sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, claimed silver in the women's 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, after finishing behind Switzerland's Ditaji Kambundji, who raced to a historic victory.
Kambundji, 23, stunned the field with a blistering run of 12.24 seconds, setting a new national record and handing Switzerland its first-ever world title in the event.
Amusan, the 2022 champion and world record holder, followed closely in 12.29 seconds, securing Nigeria's 12th medal in the history of the championships.
The bronze medal went to American Grace Stark, who clocked 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44 seconds, despite recording the slowest reaction time in the field.
Poland's Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season's best of 12.49 seconds for fifth place, narrowly edging Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who registered the same time.
Jamaica's Danielle Williams, the defending champion from 2023, came in seventh at 12.53 seconds, with Nadine Visser of the Netherlands completing the line-up in eighth at 12.56 seconds.
Amusan had earlier impressed in the semi-final, storming to victory in 12.36 seconds ahead of Visser and Skrzyszowska, raising hopes of defending her crown. However, in the final, despite a strong start, she was unable to hold off Kambundji's late surge.
The result adds another medal to the 28-year-old Nigerian's illustrious career, following her historic gold in Eugene in 2022, when she set the world record of 12.12 seconds.
