The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has reportedly been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.
According to a report by CitiNewsroom.com, "details surrounding the reasons for his arrest remain unclear."
Abronye's arrest comes after he made a formal request seeking political asylum in eight countries, including Ghana's neighbouring country, Côte d'Ivoire, the United States, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The outspoken politician has cited four reasons for seeking security protection and political asylum.

Baffoe's claims are based on what he termed "consistent, escalating political persecution, threats to his life, and systemic abuse of state security powers by the current Government of Ghana."
According to Abronye, the four main reasons for his request include threats of unlawful arrest and detention, intimidation, targeted harassment, and an escalating pattern of persecution following his arrest in February 2025.
"In February 2025, shortly after the current NDC government assumed office, I became the first opposition politician to be invited, arrested, and detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for over 13 hours.
"My arrest followed my public criticism of the government's crude, unfair, and blanket dismissal of over 150,000 Ghanaian workers without due cause and a call for their immediate reinstatement. During my detention, I was threatened, intimidated, and sternly warned that unless I ceased criticising the government, I would face severe reprisals in the future," he stated.

He added, "In recent months, there has been a disturbing trend of opposition politicians being arrested and detained beyond the constitutionally mandated 48 hours without bail. These have created a climate of fear and intimidation where political opponents of the government are deliberately targeted. Based on these realities and the direct threats to my life and liberty, I am convinced that both I and my family are in imminent and grave danger."
