SULPHUR, Okla. (KXII) - More than a year after an EF-3 tornado tore through homes and businesses in downtown Sulphur, rebuilding is well underway. Storefronts are going up and businesses are returning to the city.
Bromide Mountain Company was one of several businesses displaced by the tornado. They've been building a new store on Broadway with plans to open this fall, while incorporating salvaged pieces of their original 118-year-old building.
"Some of the brick downtown we saved, we're gonna try and put it on a wall somewhere, just to bring a piece of that history with us to the new location," Bromide Mountain Company owner Jade Tucker stated.
The new space will also be home to local coffee shop and bakery, Cup and Crumb.
"It's been an absolute blessing to watch it go up, and encourage all of our customers, like hey, look what's coming!" Cup and Crumb owner Carrie Ransom said.
Progress at the new Mix Mercantile shop is taking shape in downtown. Raina's Bar recently got approval for a rebuild, and 3rd and Broadway, has since reopened their doors at a new location at 119 W Muskogee Avenue.
"She said we have to build back, and I had agreed in my heart that I wanted to do something, I didn't want to leave the downtown," 3rd and Broadway owner Julie Jack stated.
Owners say they hope to restore Sulphur again to a lively destination known for its unique shops, restaurants and entertainment.
"The side of town that was hit the hardest is finally clearing up people are rebuilding, there is businesses rebuilding downtown especially, its taken a little time but its happening," Tucker said.
"It took a big hit last year and even into this year, I think a lot of places are still trying to get back up and running," Cup and Crumb owner Mika Woods added.
