St. Luke's Health awards $1.5 million in Community Health Improvement grants, including $134,000 for East Texas nonprofits

St. Luke's Health, a member of CommonSpirit Health, has awarded $1.5 million in Community Health Improvement Grants to 23 nonprofit organizations across Greater Houston, East Texas and the Brazos Valley for 2025. Of that total, $134,000 will directly benefit three organizations serving the East Texas area: Burke Center, CASA of the Pines, Inc., and The Rose.

"The Community Health Improvement Grants program is vital to our mission," said Monte Bostwick, market president, East Texas and Brazos Valley. "It allows us to extend our vision of a healthier future beyond hospital walls by collaborating with organizations that share our same values."

These grants, funded by the CommonSpirit Health Community Health Improvement Grant program, address critical community needs identified in health assessments. They provide vulnerable individuals with resources to improve their health, creating a lasting impact through collaborative efforts. The grants will help agencies tackle issues that include access to health care and health services, mental health, food insecurity, safe shelter and housing, violence prevention and human trafficking.

"Partnering with local organizations and supporting their wide-ranging initiatives are essential to improving the lives of the most vulnerable people in our region," said Michael Lawson, Houston Market President of St. Luke's Health. "It demonstrates St. Luke's Health's commitment to the betterment of the communities where we offer nationally-recognized health care with humankindness."

The Community Health Improvement Grant program helps to improve community health and health equity, and enhance local service systems, via restricted charitable contributions for defined projects. Collaborating 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations applied to receive grant funds to address significant issues in community health needs assessments.
