SPRINGFIELD -- Logan Hillman scored eight points in the fourth quarter, Alex Schonhardt made six 3-pointers and the Helias Crusaders came away with a 61-55 victory Sunday afternoon against the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats in the Bill Rowe's Queen City Showcase at Greenwood Laboratory School.
Helias fell behind 6-0 -- its largest deficit of the game -- before a Schonhardt 3 trimmed the deficit to 15-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats battled through foul trouble in the first half and continued to hold a 29-28 advantage at intermission.
Schonhardt hit back-to-back 3s and Hillman followed with a basket for an 8-0 run and a 39-33 Helias lead with 5:04 to go in the third quarter. Logan-Rogersville went on a 10-3 run to retake the lead 43-42, but the Crusaders ended the quarter with a pass from Sam Lopez to Hillman for a layup and a 47-45 lead going into the fourth.
Schonhardt's sixth 3 came from the left wing with 6:13 to play, giving the Crusaders a 52-47 lead. Hillman scored six of Helias' next eight points, including a tough basket over the reach of 6-foot-6 Titus Moore with 1:21 to play for a 60-53 advantage, Helias' largest lead of the day.
Logan-Rogersville shot just 2-of-8 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter
and was unable to get any closer than six points of the lead the rest of the way.
Hillman led Helias with 21 points, earning game MVP honors. He scored just five points in the first half, then made a pair of 3s in his eight-point third quarter.
Schonhardt tallied 18 points beyond the arc and Alex Wood also reached double figures with 11 points before fouling out with 1:13 to play.
Logan-Rogersville (6-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 4, was led by Chase Branham with 21 points. Titus Moore and Marcus Moore each added eight points.
Helias (2-5) plays next weekend in the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic at Fleming Fieldhouse. The Crusaders face the Charlotte Fightin' Tarpons of Punta Gorda, Fla., in the first round at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
