ATLANTA (TND) -- Delta Airlines revealed what three employees were doing when a tire explodedthat killed two men and left a third person seriously injured.
The airline told The National Deskthat the incident at its wheel and brake shop "involved wheel components that were being disassembled for maintenance."
They pointed out that the wheel was "not attached to an aircraft" when it exploded.
Officials with the Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the Georgians killed in the incident as 58-yer-old Mirko F. Marweg and 37-year-old Luis Aldarondo.
First responders arrived after 5 a.m. Tuesday atDelta's Technical Operations Center, which is near the the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Marweg, Aldarondo, and the third unidentified individual involved were working in service of Delta when the incident happened, according to Delta Airlines. The injured individual remains in medical care, they added.
Delta TechOps Chief of Operations and President John Laughter referred to the incident as an "accident"in a memo to employees Tuesday.
Tragically, two of our team members involved passed away and one other team member was seriously injured. We are extending our full support to their families at this difficult time and conducting an investigation to determine what happened.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an investigation as investigators determine what caused the incident.
Laughter also showed support for his staff in his memo.
"Please know your safety and wellbeing comes first - always, and that your leaders are here for you," it read in part.
Flights on Tuesday were not affected. Delta stated that the incident didn't impact customer or maintenance operations on Tuesday.
The Federal Aviation Administration officials told TND they are aware of the event and in communication with the airline.
