Wisconsin football fans call for job of former Ohio State Buckeye, chant 'Fire Fickell'

The Wisconsin faithful might witnessed one of the worst halves of football at Camp Randall Stadium after a horrendous opening 30 minutes for the Badgers against Maryland in their Big Ten opener.

And they showed their disgust by calling for the job of former Ohio State Buckeye Luke Fickell with boos raining down on the Wisconsin head coach.

"Fire Fickell," the student section chanted. A similar reaction was taking place on social media.

It was in response to Wisconsin being shut out by Maryland, 20-0 at the break.

It was mistake after mistake after mistake for Fickell's team. Coming off a blowout loss at Alabama, there was the thought that the Badgers could have some sort of "get-right" game against Maryland back at home before a bye next week. They were even 10-point favorites by the Vegas oddsmakers.

Instead, this is how Wisconsin's first three possessions went: blocked field goal, interception, blocked punt. And that was all just in the first quarter.

The miscues led to easy touchdowns for Maryland at the same time that the Badgers' once-proud run game was gone -- they were averaging 1.5 yards per carry.

Before Fickell took over at Wisconsin, he led the Cincinnati Bearcats. He was 57-18 there, and in 2021, led the program to the College Football Playoff Semifinals and the first 13-0 regular-season record in school history.

His coaching career started at Ohio State during an exceptionally tumultuous time. He stepped in after OSU had parted with Jim Tressel and went 6-6 in the 2011 regular season before falling in that season's Gator Bowl.

Fickell was part of nine Big Ten Conference titles as an Ohio State assistant. He served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2005 to 2016.

He was also a standout as a Buckeyes nose guard from 1992 to 96, starting a then-school-record 50 straight games during his playing career. Fickell was a local product, graduating from DeSales, where he was also a state champion wrestler.

Here's how social media is reacting to the Badgers' horrendous first half:

Billy Edwards Jr. started the game after missing the last 2 ½ games with a knee injury. But he was slowed by the injury early on and left the game in the first quarter. Edwards did not return. Backup QB Danny O'Neil, who started in Weeks 2 and 3, is 5 of 10 for 50 yards, zero touhdowns and one interception in the first half.
