How lawmakers say they may change the way magic mushrooms are used for healthcare in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -A Colorado bill being considered by lawmakers would allow the sale and distribution of FDA-approved drugs containing Psilocybin, the active chemical in psychedelic mushrooms.

"The bill allows for FDA-approved versions of psilocybin drugs to be used and prescribed in Colorado. It only goes into effect if the FDA approves a synthetic version of psilocybin for drugs in the country," said Representative Kyle Brown, a supporter of the bill.

According to lawmakers, currently, psilocybin is a Schedule 1 drug meaning it has no medical use and has a high potential for abuse. This bill would allow doctors to prescribe medication that contains the chemical to patients if approved by the FDA. Supporters say it would help to expand services for mental health available.

Rep. Brown said, "This bill is ultimately about access to mental healthcare...Should the FDA find the sufficient evidence that a synthetic version of psilocybin is safe and effective for patients with particular mental health conditions this bill will make that drug available immediately."

According to officials, although no medication has been approved yet they expect to see some drugs in testing soon get approved.

The bill has seen bipartisan support passing a house committee in a 6-2 vote.
