One Los Angeles Dodgers fan who was trying to celebrate the team's World Series win over the New York Yankees on October 30 had his life forever changed when the fireworks he was setting off on the street blew up in his hand.
Video of the fireworks accident involving 25-year-old Kevin King quickly went viral for just how shocking it was to see.
Now, King's father, Kevin Sr., is speaking out about what exactly happened, how his son is now doing, and what the doctors are telling him and his son about the devastating injuries he suffered.
"He's basically missing his pointing finger," Kevin King, Sr. told Fox 11 News this week. "The meat portion between the pointing finger and the thumb area, all of this here has exploded off.
"He did have some issues between both his ears. He has fragment, just like, scarring and some scabs and stuff on his face from the explosion."
When first responders arrived on the scene of the accident at around 2:30 a.m. and applied tourniquets to both arms before transporting him to a hospital, King was reportedly conscious and alert.
"The surgeon did see the video," King's father said. "They don't understand how he was able to walk away with the injuries that he that he has. He protected 90 percent of his face from the explosion."
As for what the future now holds for the 25-year-old, he is scheduled to have a third surgery, and doctors aren't sure if he will ever be able to return to his oil drilling job, but he also wants to use his accident as a reminder to others of the dangers fireworks possess.
"He knows obviously, he made a pretty bad mistake of deciding to light a firework, not knowing where it came from," King Sr. said. "And then at the same time, it's like he's already like, 'What can I do to make this positive, pops?'
"They're weapons. It's dangerous. They're not toys. I will never light a firework again after watching that."
