Former Miami-Dade Police officer on trial for allegedly molesting 3 children

Jurors are deliberating the fate of a former Miami-Dade police officer accused of sexually abusing three children.

Daniel Ramos Avilés, 43, was arrested two years ago by his own department and is facing seven criminal charges. Prosecutors say he molested three young girls he knew, including one as young as six years old.

During the trial, the child victims testified that Ramos Avilés touched them inappropriately and exposed himself.

"You heard her describe what happened in the pool with the private part touching game. You heard her describe how the defendant would sit down and tell her stories like the Big Bad Wolf, and what that included as he touched her and rubbed her in weird ways," State Attorney Natalie Snyder said during closing arguments while describing the disturbing details.

Meanwhile, defense attorneys criticized the police investigation as sloppy and argued that there was no physical evidence to support the charges.

"You can have physical evidence such as DNA, semen," defense attorney Scott Kotler told jurors. "You have none of that."

The defense also urged the jury to base its verdict on facts and law rather than emotion.

Jurors began deliberating around 1 p.m. Wednesday. If convicted, Ramos Avilés faces up to life in prison.

However, after about three hours of deliberations, jurors were sent home for the day after asking, "What would happen if there is no consensus in some charges?"

Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez did not want to answer the question Wednesday and ordered the jury to be back Thursday morning to continue deliberating.
