The Gemini Killer Reveal in 'Dexter: Resurrection' Just Changed the Whole Game

Gareth, a.k.a. The Gemini Killer (David Dastmalchian), has been the most mysterious of Leon Prater's (Peter Dinklage) serial killer dinner party guests in Dexter: Resurrection. He quietly lurks in the background as the others share stories and conversation about their work. Every once in a while, he weighs in with an opinion. But he's not as open as Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris), as personable as Mia (Krysten Ritter), nor as jovial as Al (Eric Stonestreet). He's also rumored to be one of the most deplorable of the killers.

Fans have been theorizing about him, most notably picking up on the fact that he kills twins and arranges them in creepy poses, some drawing comparisons to The Zodiac Killer. He gets his moment to shine in Episode 6, "Cats and Mouse," and the twist relating to his character is arguably the biggest and most shocking of the season so far.

Spoiler warning: spoilers ahead for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1, Episode 6 "Cats and Mouse"

Gareth's Narcissism Is Showing

In Episode 5, following Mia's arrest, Leon, unsurprisingly, calls the others to meet at his house for a discussion. It's the first time Gareth shows some personality and participates in the conversation in a big way. And it appears that he takes narcissism, one of the common personality traits of psychopaths, to incredible heights. His ego is bigger than everyone else's in the room combined, and Dexter (Michael C. Hall) picks up on this right away. Gareth is not just overly confident; he's obsessed with himself and his work.

Naturally, Dexter investigates him further by reading news articles and viewing the graphic photos of his victims. He gets excited about the possibility of ending this notorious killer's life. Gareth meets The Code without question, and he's the perfect candidate to be next on Dexter's list. It's just a matter of when and how.

Dexter does what he usually does and follows Gareth to scope out the situation. He ends up at a bookstore where he notices Gareth picking up a book, adding a bookmark to it, and walking away. Dexter grabs the book, fittingly a true crime novel about notorious serial killers, and finds the bookmark placed on a page about The Gemini Killer. On the back of the bookmark is a location and a time: 8 p.m. tonight. When Dexter arrives at his basement apartment later that evening and finds Gareth there waiting for him, he realizes that he has been made. Gareth doesn't know who he really is, but he knows that Dexter followed him, removed the bookmark, and wants to know why.

Leveraging his quick-thinking skills, Dexter plays right into Gareth's ego and says he's a huge fan and was embarrassed to admit it. Gareth believes this because, of course, why wouldn't anyone be a fan of his? He agrees to a drink, but he's smart enough to switch the glasses before taking a swig. Unfortunately for him, Dexter is always one step ahead, predicted he would do that, and started with the laced drink in his own hand.

With Gareth out for the count, Dexter can't help but follow through with his plan. Why does he risk killing Gareth after deciding not to kill Mia for fear of Leon catching on? One of Gareth's last kills, and one he boasted about to Dexter, was of a father and his teenage son. That hit way too close to home. Dexter will figure out the details later. The Dark Passenger is screaming in his ear to finish this job.

After an incredibly close call, Dexter manages to dispose of Gareth's body and move on with his night, satisfied to have removed another killer from the world. He'll figure out how to handle Leon later. But he'll have to sooner than expected, thanks to a surprise call from Charley (Uma Thurman) with an invitation he can't refuse.

Gemini Doesn't Just Kill Twins; He Is One

Perceptive fans may have guessed the twist when Dexter asked Gareth who he was leaving the bookmark for, and he weirdly said himself. It was an odd answer, but for someone like Gareth, it would make sense. He has a grandiose sense of self-importance and might do such nonsensical things.

But there's a more logical answer, and it's revealed in the final moments of the episode. Dexter arrives at the meeting point when Al gleefully knocks on his car window and says they are "going on a whirlybird," meaning a plane. As they board, Leon notes that they're waiting for Gareth. Dexter, of course, knows that Gareth isn't coming.

Or is he? In the nick of time before take-off, Gareth walks up to the plane and sits next to Dexter in the seat. Dexter is noticeably taken aback. It's in this moment that he realizes it isn't The Gemini Killer but the Gemini Killers, plural. Gareth doesn't just kill twins; he is also (or rather, was) one. The remaining twin is still alive, and now Dexter will have to answer to him.

How This Twist Changes the Game in 'Dexter: Resurrection'

With Dexter now realizing The Gemini Killer is two people, it begs the question: is his twin just someone else who conducts kills with him, or alternates? It makes sense that they would work together since it would be challenging for a single person to subdue and kill two people, then arrange their bodies.

Some had theorized before this episode that The Gemini Killer was also the notorious New York Ripper, whom Claudette (Kadia Saraf) had been obsessed with trying to identify and take down. This theory may be right, and Gareth's twin conducts those murders while he does the Gemini ones.

More important than who does what, however, is what will happen to and with Dexter now that he realizes Gareth has a twin. If the twin doesn't already know, he will soon discover that his brother is dead or at least missing. Considering Lowell is also missing, and Mia was just arrested (also now presumed dead, likely at the hands of Leon and Charley to prevent her from talking), it makes sense that suspicion would start to fall on the new guy, Red, a.k.a. Dexter.

Fans can't wait to see if Gareth's twin learns who Dexter really is, and what he did to his brother. Gareth (and his brother) fashioned themselves as the most notorious serial killers, at the top of the FBI Most Wanted List. The only reason they had that distinction was that the Bay Harbor Butcher was presumed dead. If Gemini realizes not only that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher, but also that he's still alive and has been continuing to kill all this time, he'll know he's no longer number one. That would be a devastating blow to his ego.

Given the senseless nature of Gareth's murders and the fact that his brother is now left to continue the work alone, the story could take many turns. Of course, another possibility is simply that Dexter manages to get Gareth's brother on his table just as quickly as he did Gareth. First, he'll need to get through Leon's surprise party, though.

It will undoubtedly be a battle of egos as Dexter aims to show Gareth's brother, like he did Gareth, that he's number one, not them. With Leon watching closely, Dexter faces his most complicated and egotistical target yet, and for the first time, he'll have to do double the work to eliminate a single killer.
