Pittsburgh water officials investigate East Liberty sinkhole
A large sinkhole was discovered in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood on Monday.
TribLive news partner WTAE reports that a 10 feet wide, 4 feet deep sinkhole opened in front of a stop sign before the intersection of Rippey and North Beatty streets.
Officials at Pittsburgh Water have started an investigation into the sinkhole.
WTAE reports that crews determined the problem is not the sewer main itself but two private lines that connect houses to the sewer system.
"Right now, we are seeing that there are two sewer laterals, collapsed. The laterals are on private property. And so, the investigation is still ongoing," Pittsburgh Water spokeswoman Rebecca Zito told WTAE.
A section of Rippey Street near the sinkhole is closed to traffic.
No injuries were reported.
Sinkholes are a common occurrence throughout Western Pennsylvania.
A Unity Township woman fell into a sinkhole recently in Westmoreland County when she was searching for her cat. She was found dead days later.
