Syracuse football: how should we feel about the rest of the Orange's schedule?

The Syracuse Orange are off to a perfect 2-0 start in the Fran Brown era after two weeks, but there is plenty of football left to go this season.

Syracuse will obviously be in control of its own final destiny, mainly based on how the program plays the rest of the way. However, it also helps to keep in mind where the Orange stack up versus the rest of its schedule now compared to the start of the year.

That's the question we're asking today: how do we feel about the path ahead for the Orange moving forward given that we know more about this team and the rest of program's upcoming opponents compared to a few weeks back?

After going through a bye this week, the rest of the schedule now looks like this:

The updated numbers say a lot about the path ahead for the Orange. For starters, Syracuse should be favorites versus Stanford and Holy Cross both in the Dome. You'd expect Fran and company to keep the mentality of playing each opponent like it was one game at a time. If we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, the next "real big test" for Syracuse will be the October road trip away from the 315.

Syracuse will have another bye week in October, but do face a tough three-game stretch which includes UNLV (93% for at least six wins), NC State (42%) and Pittsburgh (78%). Both UNLV and Pittsburgh have taken care of business out of the gate.

The Rebels scored 72 points on Utah Tech then went to Houston and beat them 27-7 on the road. We'll really know more about them after next weekend, when UNLV faces a road trip to play the Kansas Jayhawks. Like UNLV, Pitt looks a bit stronger out of the gate with a 31-point win over Kent State and a close road win over Cincinnati. Likewise, we'll see how Pitt looks after playing West Virginia this coming Saturday.

NC State has had a disappointing start, needing a fourth quarter offensive explosion to beat Western Carolina, then getting destroyed 51-10 by Tennessee. The game that looked like the biggest road challenge might not be as daunting as anticipated.

For Syracuse, the Virginia Tech game back at home on alumni weekend arguably looks a bit more intriguing for both teams now. The Hokies were seen in the preseason as dark-horse ACC championship contenders, but fell to Vanderbilt on opening week. Virginia Tech still has games against No. 10 Miami, No. 22 Clemson, No. 24 Boston College, and Rutgers.

It is obviously still very early into the year, but the back-half of Syracuse's schedule looks way more interesting now than most initially thought. BC began this year strong early and this looks more like a matchup both teams will have underlined and highlighted. Like BC, California also sits at 2-0 after coming off a surprising win over Auburn. That game could be way more of a test with Syracuse having to make that second trip to the West Coast if Cal can continue to show signs of life.

And then, there's the Miami Hurricanes. Let us again remind ourselves there is still plenty of time left to go this year, but The U has emerged as a clear favorite to win the ACC. Should this keep up, this will likely be the toughest opponent all year for the Orange. Talk about a way to end the regular season.

In summary, it's been a fascinating start to the college football season. Looking at the early results, Syracuse's path forward still remains manageable, but the outlook for a lot of these games on the schedule suddenly got way more interesting after a few weeks into the year. There are indeed a lot of "swing" games particularly against those ACC opponents later on.

Looking ahead, the Orange will again be in full control of whatever their end result may be. However they get there, it's going to be a crazy rest of the season.

Now it's your turn: after two weeks, how are you feeling about the Orange's schedule moving forward?
