Father of legendary musician dies at 101: 'He lived a long and wonderful life'

The father of John Oates, half of the legendary rock duo Hall & Oates, has died at the age of 101.

The musician confirmed his father's death on Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

"We received the sad news that my father Alfred Oates passed away," John Oates wrote. "He lived a long and wonderful life and he was loved by so many around the world. I was so glad I got to see him one last time just a day ago."

Oates told MassLive in an interview Wednesday that he saw his father just before he played the last day of the Philadelphia Folk Festival on Sunday, Aug. 18. Oates' father lived only a few miles away from the festival site.

"My son and I went in the morning and we saw him and he was great," the singer said. "I think he felt that he had said his 'goodbyes' to us because it wasn't obvious, but he was in really good spirits and really clear."

Oates even talked about seeing his father while on stage at the festival.

"I even talked about it on stage that I saw my dad and now I'm playing the folk festival [like] this is like a bucket list thing for me. This is great," Oates recalled. "And then next morning he didn't wake up."

"If you have to go at 101, I guess that's a pretty good way to go," the singer added.

Oates, who is currently on tour in support of his recent album "Reunion," will be playing two shows in Massachusetts this weekend.
