Girl hit and killed by garbage truck in Cary identified as Davis Drive Middle School student

A 13-year-old girl died Friday after getting hit by a garbage truck and a Raleigh man is facing charges, Cary police said.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. at the intersection of High House Road and Cornerstone Drive in Cary, according to a warrant.

The driver, 57-year-old Adrian Holt, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to reduce speed.

Cary police said Holt hit the girl at a crosswalk. Authorities took the girl to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries.

The incident, which unfolded in seconds, has forever changed the lives of those involved.

Helen Montague, Holt's girlfriend, said she spoke with Holt after the incident and described him as "very emotional."

Davis Drive Middle School released a statement that read in part:

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I share that one of our current students, Shiyu "Chloe" Hua, passed away unexpectedly this morning. This devastating loss will be deeply felt by our school community, and our hearts are with Chloe's family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. Though her time with us was not long, Chloe made a profound and lasting impact on our school. Just last month, she was recognized as our 8th Grade Student of the Month.

The Wall Recycling company, where Holt is employed, released a statement regarding the crash, saying:

We are heartbroken by the tragic accident involving one of our vehicles, which resulted in the death of a 13-year-old girl. The incident occurred at 10 a.m. Friday near the Cornerstone Shopping Center in Cary, NC. First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to the girl's family and friends. Our thoughts are with them during this unimaginable time of loss. This experience has profoundly affected our entire company and the communities we serve. We are cooperating fully with local law enforcement and conducting an internal review to understand how this terrible accident occurred and how we can ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

"It's sad. Sad for the person who died and their families," Montague said. "All I can do is hope for the best and pray for the family who lost a loved one."
